As an Electrical engineering student as well as an amateur radio operator, I am usually scavanging for electrical components for free. An easy source for free components in old electronics. So I regularly put ads on various local online classifieds, looking for people who want old electronics and computers cleared out. I scavange all the components I need and then I sort it out for scrap. For example:
Copper wire
Steel from enclosures
Aluminium from heatsinks
All the scavanged PCBs aka E-waste
Certain Memory, Cards, and Mother Boards are GOLD heavy (E-Bay)
I have recently been watching some YouTube videos, about people who "Dumpster Dive" at electronics stores. I have been considering giving it a shot.
