You will surely want to keep your firearms secured to keep unauthorized persons hands off weather they be criminal or curious. There are various storage techniques, Some just keep the firearm being loaded and fired, all the way to in home vaults. The prices range from free to several thousand dollars.

On the low end are trigger and cable locks. These will prevent the gun from being loaded and fired, but will do little against theft.

Some guns have locks built in, it provides the same protection level as a trigger or cable lock. This is my personal Taurus PT145

The next step up would be a lock box, it does a little more to deter theft as long as it is bolted down. If you have a permit to carry these can also be installed in vehicles in the event you go some where you cannot carry.

Then there are safes. You can can a $100 floor safe from a big box store or more common are safes specifically designed for guns. some are light weight safes nothing more than a locker, all the way up to very heavy fire rated 32+ gun safes.

There is however a bit of a dilema when it come to home defense. By locking your gun in a safe you make it unaccessable. My solution is as follows:

My wife and I have no kids so the gun I carry daily sits in the night stand at night and when I am in the house, If I leave the gun leaves with me. The rest of my collection resides in a locked gun cabnet.

If you do have children you may want to consider a safe or lockbox that has a biometric lock (opens with your fingerprint) or one that has finger indentations on it so it can be quickly opened in the dark.
